Meeting with The Ministry of Economic Development -15th May 2024

The delegation of the Sri Lanka – Maldives Business Council (SLMLBC) had the privilege of meeting with the officials from the Ministry of Economic Development.  The State Minister, H.E. Mr. Hussain Zamir, warmly welcomed the council and highlighted the Maldives’ robust economic trajectory. He emphasized new initiatives in the economy and human development outlined in the president’s manifesto.

The President of SLMLBC underscored the council’s close collaboration with the high commissions of both countries to benefit private sector companies and enhance bilateral trade. Mr. Sudesh Mendis further requested that the Ministry regularly share information on ongoing and upcoming business opportunities with the council for dissemination to its members. The Minister agreed to this request, recognizing the importance of strengthening trade activities and maintaining strong bilateral relationships.

Concerns about the declining market share of Sri Lankan products were discussed, with a commitment to improvement. Plans were outlined to introduce new products, collaborate on innovative trade services, and utilize media support for business development. Ministry officials highlighted various projects in the tourism and infrastructure sectors, including resort development, the Central Port Development Project, real estate opportunities in Hulumale, the development of Fonado Island as an airport economic zone, and the construction of schools and hospitals.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain close engagement and communication between the ministries and business communities of both countries.
